One primary difference between hookah and e-cigarettes is how they create vapor. The hookah uses a water pipe and hot coals to make vapor. Meanwhile, e-cigarettes (also known as electronic nicotine delivery systems) use batteries to heat up the e-liquid before you can inhale it.
Hookahs and e-cigarettes also use different ingredients. Hookahs use shisha tobacco and flavorings that may include honey and glycerin. On the other hand, e-cigarettes use e-liquid that has propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, nicotine, and several food-grade flavor concentrates as its ingredients.

If the coals get too hot they can burn up the flavored tobacco and you will experience a dry hit. It's always best to try to avoid dry hits whenever possible since it can burn your throat. You also have to be careful that you don't let the coals die down and lose their heat whenever you smoke hookah.
Although they both have several core differences, hookah and vaping also share several similarities. For example, both methods turn tobacco into vapor so you can safely inhale it. Here are some more ways they are similar:
Regardless if you prefer to hookah or use an e-cigarette, you will have to buy ingredients and tools for both of them. An e-cigarette will need new e-juice whenever you run out and occasionally batteries and tanks. While hookah owners will have to stock up on extra coals to heat up the tobacco and hose.
Another similarity is that there are hundreds of hookahs, e-cigarettes and vaping devices available on the market. You can choose ones that come in different colors and even models with different tanks, coils and other parts. Some e-cigarettes may resemble a USB memory stick, while others may look like a pen. You can buy a traditional hookah or decide to get a hookah pen.
If you are trying to stop smoking, both are great ways to enjoy nicotine without the damaging side effects of smoking cigarettes.
